CARTA: El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro Trail Association header

CARTA Quick Facts

Background

El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro—“The Royal Road of the Interior Lands” was federally designated as a National Historic Trail in 2000. CARTA was established in 2003 to help promote, educate, and preserve the cultural and historic trail corridor with its partners in the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management.

Mission

The purpose of the Association is to facilitate goodwill, cooperation, and understanding among communities, and to promote the education, conservation, and protection of the multicultural and multiethnic history and traditions associated with the living trail, El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro.

Membership and Benefits

CARTA members come from diverse professional backgrounds, including historians, archaeologists, architects, engineers, librarians, authors, archivists, researchers, community advocates, history buffs, and trail aficionados. As we expand our vision of what the Trail has meant and continues to mean for the vibrant communities along its length, we will continue our outreach to broad and in-depth participation.

Member benefits include the quarterly journal, Chronicles of the Trail; invitations to events, conferences, and symposiums; participation in community activities; membership in the national Partnership for the National Trails System (PNTS); a subscription to the quarterly PNTS Pathways magazine; and enrollment in the CARTA electronic (e-mail) announcements of local, regional, and national trail-related activities.

Volunteer Opportunities

CARTA members enjoy a variety of volunteer opportunities, ranging from archaeological surveys and analysis, historical research, oral history programs, trail work, signage projects, working with students of all ages, participating in a Speaker’s Bureau, fundraising and funding development, and personal pursuits related to the prehistoric, historic, and contemporary El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. For an updated list of volunteer opportunities, please see our Volunteer Page. The potential is enormous… Please bring your own ideas!
