— CHRONICLES OF THE TRAIL —
Vol. 1 No. 4 October — December 2005
In the October through December 2005, Vol. 1 No. 4, edition of Chronicles of the Trail, we feature an article about a major upcoming event for El Camíno Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail, namely, the opening of New Mexico’s newest state monument, El Camíno Real International Heritage Center. It will be a centerpiece of the adventure of the trail. Educator and scholar R. B. “Ben” Brown, International Liaison Officer, CARTA Board of Directors, tells us the charming story of how free-spirited 19th century photographer Ben Wittick spent his Christmas on the trail in 1881. Jay W. Sharp, editor of Chronicles of the Trail, tells the story of Union Captain James “Paddy” Graydon’s misguided attempt to spread havoc among the Confederate forces encamped just east of the Río Grande on a cold night in February of 1882. Louann Jordan reports on Santa Fe’s progress in developing a hiking trail along El Camino Real Scenic Byway from near the intersection of Airport Road and NM 599 (the Santa Fe Bypass) to downtown Santa Fe. A number of voices, from 1598 through 1847, report on the difficult passage over the Jornada del Muerto, that fearful 90-mile stretch of the trail that lay east of the Caballo and Fra Cristóbal Mountains in the south-central part of New Mexico. Finally, the CARTA president’s regular quarterly message can be found on this web site here.
