In the April — June 2006, Vol. 2 No. 2, edition of the Chronicles of the Trail, we have published Ben Moffett’s article on the Rededication of New Mexico’s Coronado State Monument, located near Bernalillo, north of Albuquerque, as our cover feature. Patrick H. Beckett, CARTA President, brings us up to date on recent events. Jay W. Sharp, editor of the Chronicles of the Trail, tells the story of a young private who fought with the Confederates during the Civil War battle at Val Verde. We report on the new plaza and new statue at the Señora de la Candelaria Catholic Church at the community of Doña Ana, once a paraje, or regular campsite, on the trail. R. B. “Ben” Brown, CARTA International Liaison Officer, reports on the results of the trip he and Pat Beckett made to Ciudad Chihuahua to meet with various people and organizations interested in the trail. Ben Brown and the co-administrators for the trail (Sarah Schlanger, Bureau of Land Management, and Michael Romero Taylor, National Park Service) update us on the plans for a Spaceport, which, if the location is approved, will lie astride the heart of the famed Jornada del Muerto. LeRoy Unglaub, who has extensive documentation of prehistoric and historic rock art across Southern New Mexico and western Texas, shares some photographs of mysterious Spanish-language inscriptions on boulders on the flanks of Mesa Contadero, across the Río Grande from Fort Craig. George Torok, Immediate Past CARTA President and current CARTA Board Member, recaps CARTA events of 2005.
