EL CAMINO REAL DE TIERRA ADENTRO TRAIL ASSOCIATION

— CHRONICLES OF THE TRAIL —

Vol. 2 No. 3 July — September 2006

In the July — September 2006, Vol. 2 No. 3, edition of the Chronicles of the Trail, we lead with an article by Sarah Schlanger, Bureau of Land Management, and Michael Romero Taylor, National Park Service, co-administrators for the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail, who bring us up to date on major events taking place along the trail. (See CARTA News “Trail Work Moving Ahead,” in “News.”) Patrick H. Beckett, CARTA President, updates us on other recent events. (See “President’s Message,” in “News.”) Ben Moffett tells us about responses received by enthusiastic visitors to El Camino Real International Heritage Center (See “El Camino Real International Heritage Center: It’s High Quality,” in “News.”) We run a brief history of Fort Seldon, originally compiled and published by Hugh M. Milton in 1971. Jay W. Sharp, editor of the Chronicles of the Trail, gives a background on mariachis, who will be playing their usual prominent role as the festival season gets underway along the trail during the late summer and early fall. Jean Fulton, CARTA board member, announces a forthcoming conservation workshop, which will be held at the Cusihuiriachi Mission near Ciudad Chihuahua in Chihuahua. We report on the participation by three members of CARTA — Félix Almaraz, Joe Sánchez and board member R. B. “Ben” Brown — in the VII Congreso Internacional de Caminería Hispánica met in Pastrana, a town near Guadalajara, Spain. We report on board member Ed Staski’s highly deserved receipt of a 2006 Heritage Preservation Award, presented each year by the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division, Department of Cultural Affairs, for his research into the diverse cultures that traversed El Camino Real. Finally, we have run, on the inside last page, the NPS map that shows the location of the proposed Spaceport America atop El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, in the segment known as the Jornada del Muerto.
